Art Basel and BMW announce the three finalists of the BMW Art Journey art prize
The winning artist will travel around the world to create new works
Art Basel and BMW announced the list of the 2021 finalists of the BMW Art Journey, ithe world-renowned art award that rewards young or mid-career artists with the opportunity to travel around the world to conduct artistic research and create new works.
The purpose of this important recognition is to support art and creativity, bringing the winning artist everywhere in the world to give him the opportunity to do research, create a network, draw inspiration and create new works.
“Our idea was to establish a unique art prize: to offer an experience that allows creativity to unfold on the road, like a mobile studio. Together with our long-time partner Art Basel, we look forward to receiving submissions from this exciting shortlist, “says Hedwig Solis Weinstein, director of Brand Cooperations, Arts & Design at the German automaker.
The three finalists this year are:
- Julien Creuzet, 35-year-old Franco-Caribbean artist, who lives and works in Montreuil, France, and is represented by the High Art gallery of Paris;
- Kelvin Kyung Kun Park, 43-year-old Korean multimedia artist, who lives and works in Seoul and is represented by Vanguard Gallery of Shangai;
- Alice Wang , the 38-year-old Chinese sculptor and director, who lives and works between Los Angeles and Shanghai and is represented by Capsule Shangai.
The winner will be announced in late June.
Over time, the fame of the initiative has grown more and more and the jurors called to make their choice are characters of increasing importance every year. For this edition we find: Claire Hsu, director of the Asia Art Archive in Hong Kong; Matthias Mühling, director of the Städtische Galerie and Kunstbau in Munich; Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, collector and president of the Sandretto Re Rebaudengo Foundation in Turin; Philip Tinari, director of the UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, the artist Samson Young, winner of the first BMW Art Journey in 2015; Bose Krishnamachari, president of the Kochi-Muziris Biennial in India; Pauline J. Ayo, chief curator of Visual Art M + in Hong Kong; Alexandra Munroe, senior curator of Asian Art at the Guggenheim in NY; Richard Armstrong, director of the Guggenheim in NY; independent curator Shwetal Patel; Massimiliano Gioni, director of the New Museum in NY and of the Trussardi Foundation in Milan; Victoria Noorthoorn, director of the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires; Susanne Pfeffer, director of the Museum Fridericianum in Kassel and Gabi Ngcobo, founder of the Johannesburg NGO.
“We were deeply impressed by the group of artists we reviewed and the ones we selected,” said the jury. “Their profiles are very different in terms of practice, research and modes of expression, and this gives great wealth to the group. Together, their various perspectives and ways of working represent the artistic horizon of the BMW Art Journey.”
All that remains is to wait until the end of June when the name of the winner will be announced, who in addition to the opportunity to travel the world will also be able to exhibit his works in the BMW showroom at the next Art Basel Hong Kong.
