The figure of the Restorer is the most fantasized in our imagination; in reality, the restorer is a technician with a wealth of very specific knowledge and sensitivity.
In the world of art services, the Restorer is a figure of great importance for the protection and conservation of works damaged by the passage of time, by climatic conditions or by human actions.
Its task is to limit the degradation processes of the constituent materials of the works of art, to preserve their visual identity, physical integrity and socio-cultural value, acting with targeted interventions where necessary.

Before intervening on the work, the restorer analyzes multiple factors, including:
- The construction and structural component of the materials;
- The compositional structure;
- The color scheme and the realization techniques;
The restorer’s prerogative is to fully understand the history of the work in order to act with the utmost respect for the work of the artist. In this phase of study, the restorer is supported by the art historian, the chemist or by the artist himself if living, to choose the best and least invasive interventions.
There are specific intervention methods according to the type of restoration, from that on structures and supports to that on surfaces. In addition, today being able to use the most advanced technologies, the restorer, depending on his specialization, intervenes on works of ancient, modern contemporary art as well as Street Art.
Each intervention is constantly documented not only photographically, but also through reports prepared to better preserve the work over time.
This is the Condition Report, a technical document prepared by the restorer that:
- Records the state of conservation of the work of art over time
- It highlights the possible presence of damages, their extent and progress
- It becomes essential in the event of a claim for verification by the insurance company
This professional figure carries out his activity in the laboratory or in his own studio, if the product is transportable; instead it works in different conditions (outdoors, on scaffolding, in underground structures, etc.), in cases where the movement of goods is impossible due to the size, fragility or nature of the work itself.
The restorer can work as an employee within a public facility or, more often, independently or within a specialized company.
